In today’s fast-paced and hectic world, maintaining daily routines is becoming increasingly difficult. This leads to increased stress in life. This stress has become a normal part of life. While a certain amount of stress can be beneficial, excessive and prolonged stress can lead to a serious condition called burnout.

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by constant pressure and situational demands due to stress. Burnout is becoming more common among children these days due to the increased stress they face during exams. This burnout is more common during board exams or competitive exams.  

The term “burnout” was first used by psychologist Herbert Freudenberger in the 1970s. He described burnout as a state of exhaustion resulting from prolonged stress and overwork. Like other problems, burnout doesn’t happen overnight, it develops gradually.

Some students experience increased stress levels during studies, which can lead to extreme fatigue during exams. This problem is especially common during board exams, entrance exams, or competitive exams, as their performance in these exams determines their future opportunities.

Students preparing for major exams often spend day and night studying. They dedicate less time to exam preparation and sometimes even skip sleep. To focus on exam preparation, they reduce or stop socializing and focus solely on themselves, thus experiencing increased pressure.

This can lead to emotional exhaustion, decreased motivation, and decreased concentration during exam time.

  1. Studying for long periods without rest: During exams, students study for long hours, day and night, without taking breaks or resting, which causes stress and leads to burnout.
  2. Family expectations: In many families, parents or other family members have very high expectations for their students, which the students are aware of. These expectations create psychological pressure on students. This leads them to set very high goals for themselves. When expectations exceed students’ capacity, stress increases.
  3. Fear of failure: The fear of missing out on future opportunities due to failing to meet expectations in exams causes constant anxiety in students. This fear motivates students to work harder, ultimately leading to exam burnout.
  4. Disturb sleep pattern: Disturb sleep pattern directly impacts attention, concentration, memory, and other such cognitive functions. Students who disrupt their sleep patterns to study are more likely to experience fatigue and irritability caused burnout.
  5. Lack of social interaction: Due to the focus on studies during exams, students often stop talking to their friends and family or talk very little, which results in them not receiving affection from their family and increasing their feelings of burnout due to lack of emotional support.
  6. Lack of focus on physical health: Being preoccupied with exams, skipping meals for long periods of time, and not exercising, weakens the body and reduces its ability to cope with stress. This situation can lead to exam burnout.
  7. Lack of planning: Students lack time during exams, which can lead to inadequate planning. This situation can lead to exam burnout.

Recovery from exam burnout: Here are some tips to help students recover from exam burnout-

  1. Improve sleep patterns: Getting enough sleep during exams can help prevent burnout. Sleep is a powerful recovery tool for avoiding burnout. Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep during exams can help reduce the risk of burnout. Therefore, improving sleep patterns is crucial to avoiding exam burnout.
  2. Maintain relationships: Maintaining good relationships with family, neighbours, friends, and community members provides positive support, preventing burnout and pressure during exams.
  3. Physical health: It is important to pay attention to physical health during exams. For this, taking proper diet, doing yoga or stretching, walking etc. keeps the mind fresh and stress burnout does not dominate.
  4. Self-Compassion: Everyone makes mistakes. Accepting one’s own mistakes and being compassionate during exams increases resilience. This situation prevents  burnout.
  5. Relaxing the mind and body:  Deep breathing, meditation, and gently relaxing the muscles calm the mind and body. This calm state helps students focus on the present instead of worrying about future results, which is crucial for overcoming exam stress.
  6. Limit Comparisons: Every student has unique skills and learns according to their own abilities. Therefore, limiting constant comparisons to others can be very helpful in overcoming burnout.

Exam burnout in students is a state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, leading to fatigue, loss of interest in studies, decreased motivation, anger, irritability and decreased performance. However, exam burnout isn’t a permanent condition. With good awareness, proper rest, right time schedules with management, self-care, and emotional support, students can fully recover from exam burnout and regain their motivation.
